Following the very sad passing of Club President John Trevethick’s wife, Dilys, the club reached out to long‑standing friend Jayne Houghton — someone who had worked alongside Dilys many times on the Bulldog Rally. Jayne kindly offered the beautiful words below.
When Dilys and her first husband lived in London they bought a Mk1 Lotus Cortina. They did the Welsh Rally and Dilys won the ladies award. David Sutton was then looking for a co-driver for his wife Jill Robinson; he then spotted this young talented blonde co driver and asked if she would do it. Jill and Dylis competed on many international rallies all over Europe. They were team mates with Ari, Penti, Hannu and Stig.
Dilys was a co driver for many good national drivers including Bill Dobie, Richard Illife, Bob Foden. Dylis competed on 8 RAC rallies with various teams notably including Susanne Knottulinsky for the Swedish Volvo Team and for Jean Todt’s Peugeot Team. In 1991 Dilys and Terry Kaby competed in a 3-cylinder 900cc Daihatsu on British Championship Rallies, they won their class often beating the big turbo 4×4’s of the era!
Dilys was an important member of the National Rally Championship team for many years and took great delight in helping young co drivers even helping get sponsorship for some. She was a lady who had many contacts.
After marrying JT in 2003 she became an active member of W&SSCC, always being part of our events helping in many different ways.
Alongside her rallying she had a very successful teaching career.
Dilys was also an amazing Mother to David and a special Grandma to Lucille and will be missed by many.
RIP Dilys
